How does Preparation H work?
This medication is used to temporarily relieve swelling, burning, pain, and itching caused by hemorrhoids. It contains phenylephrine, which belongs to a class of drugs known as sympathomimetic amines. It works by temporarily narrowing the blood vessels in the area. This effect decreases swelling and discomfort.
Do you put Preparation H inside?
Do not place Preparation H Cooling Gel cream, gel, or ointment inside your rectum. These forms of phenylephrine rectal are for use only on the area around and just outside of your rectum. Only the rectal suppository should be placed into the rectum.
Does Preparation H make hemorrhoids go away?
Some hemorrhoids do not require treatment and will clear up on their own within a few days. Over-the-counter (OTC) treatments may work for some people. Medicated creams, such as phenylephrine gel (Preparation H), can help relieve itching and discomfort.
How long should you use Preparation H?
Don’t use this medicine for longer than is recommended. You shouldn’t use the phenylephrine rectal formulation for longer than seven days in a row. Tell your doctor if your symptoms don’t improve or worsen while using Preparation H.
